Pacing & Structure Analysis
Pacing diagnosis
The chapter opens with strong momentum but loses tension at the midpoint (pp. 47–52) where three consecutive scenes serve the same narrative function: establishing Marlowe's distrust of his brother. Consider collapsing scenes 2 and 3 into a single, sharper exchange — the redundancy is the kind of thing a sharp first reader will flag, and an acquiring editor will use as a reason to pass.
Recommendation
Cut roughly 1,200 words from the middle third. The emotional arc is doing the right work; the prose just needs to get out of its own way.
